Before you start throwing money on every item you think you need, sit down and think about what disaster is most likley to happen and make a plan.
Where you live matters, if you live in a area with high possibility of floodings or hurricanes then maybe that's what you should start prepping for. How you should prepare depends on what you are preparing for.
SHTF is not one single event, it can be anything and the likley hood of what happens depends on the climate, politics and infrastructure of the area and country you live in.
This means that you should have enough food and water stored for you and your family without having to go to the grocery store.
It's easy to be distracted and ignore whats happening in our world, but it's really important to be prepared for what may come. It's better to be safe than sorry. What would you do if something happened tomorow, would you and your family be able to survive for a week?

The very first thing you need to do is to realize that prepping is necessary. Start focusing on what's easiest and most important.
Remember that it is cheaper and easier to buy before SHTF. When everybody wants to buy the same items at the same time it's gonna be a lot harder and more expensive, this will cause more damage to everybody. Instead of buying what you need when the supply is low try to start prepping now and remember not to clean the shelves since you are not alone. The chance of surviving is much better when everyone has what they need and the government can put their effort on where its most needed to have a fully functional society again. Don't be a burden be prepared!
You need to go out and test you equipment and skills! Buying a stethoscope does not make you a doctor and the same logic applies for preparedness. When you buy a new equipment go out and test it. Don't be that person that draws too much attention buy telling everyone what new item you bought, because when SHTF they gonna they are going to become a burden to you.
Getting of the grid and becoming self reliant is the ultimate goal for some preppers. This is a life long journey and demands that you put a lot of effort to reach this point. This may or may nor be your ultimate goal, trying to be self reliant is a very good thing but you don't need to go all the way. You can choose to have solar panels together with the main electrical grid you don't have to go all in if you don't want too. Food shortages is becoming a normal thing and it's recommended that you try to grow your own produce. You don't need to own a big land to grow food, you can rent a small piece of land to grow some food even if you live in an apartment.
